Dorothy DeLay (31.3.1917. – 24.3.2002.) je bila jedna od najboljih violinskih pedagoga svih vremena. Svoju karijeru započela je kao komorna glazbenica (Stuyvesant Trio, 1939.–1942.), no ubrzo je shvatila kako je njen pravi poziv podučavanje. Vraća se školovanju, upisuje se na Julliard kod prof. Ivana Galamiana kome postaje i asistentica i gdje ostaje profesorica do kraja života (uz još nekoliko drugih američkih škola).
Studenti
Uz veliko znanje o violinskoj umjetnosti i pedagogiji, krasila ju je intuicija kojom je svakom studentu prilazila na individualan način, pobuđujući u njemu znatiželju, kritičko razmišljanje i veliku motiviranost. Rezultiralo je to velikim brojem iznimno uspješnih, svjetski poznatih umjetnika – Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Nigel Kennedy, Kurt Sassmannshaus, Anne Akiko Meyers, Midori Goto, Sarah Chang, Shlomo Mintz, Gil Shaham, Simon Fischer – da nabrojimo samo neke.
Učiteljica genij
Koristeći mnoge konvencionalne, ali i (tada još) nekonvencionalne metode podučavanja, pomaknula je granice i shvaćanja u violinskoj pedagogiji čime je dobila nadimak „Učiteljica genij“ (the Teaching Genius). Slijed violinskih koncerata
Poznate su brojne vježbice koje je koristila za usavršavanje/korekciju tehničkih elemenata sviranja, od kojih je neke i Simon Fisher uvrstio u svoje sjajno djelo Basics, a jedna od najvrjednijih stvari iz pedagoške ostavštine Dorothy DeLay je svakako slijed violinskih koncerata po kojem je običavala raditi sa svojim studentima. Djela su to najviše umjetničke i pedagoške vrijednosti u glazbenoj literaturi uopće, a u ovome slijedu su posložena po svojoj tehničkoj i muzičkoj zahtjevnosti. Dorothy DeLay (March 31, 1917 – March 4, 2002) was one of the best violin teachers of all time. She began her career as a chamber musician (Stuyvesant Trio, 1939-42), but soon realized that her real calling was teaching. She returned to school, entered Julliard, and started studying with prof. Ivan Galamian to whom later she becomes an assistant. She remains a professor at the Julliard for the rest of her life (along with several other American schools).
Students
Ms. DeLay owned a great knowledge of violin art and pedagogy, but she also had an amazing intuition which leads her to approach each student individually, arousing his curiosity, critical thinking, and great motivation. This has resulted in many outmost successful, world-renowned artists – Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Nigel Kennedy, Kurt Sassmannshaus, Anne Akiko Meyers, Midori Goto, Sarah Chang, Shlomo Mintz, Gil Shaham, Simon Fischer – to name a few.
The Teaching Genius
Using many conventional but also (at the time still) unconventional teaching methods, Ms. DeLay shifted boundaries and understandings in violin pedagogy, which gave her the title “The Teaching Genius”. The Violin Concerto Sequence
Dorothy DeLay is well known for numerous exercises she used in her teaching to perfect/correct the technical elements of playing, some of which Simon Fisher included in his brilliant work Basics but also one of the most valuable things in the pedagogical legacy of Ms. DeLay is certainly the sequence of violin concerts she used to work with her students. These pieces are of the highest artistic and pedagogical value in the music literature in general, and in this sequence, they are arranged according to their technical and musical complexity. Today, this sequence is one of the most important references to violin teachers and violin students.
